Born to be free by Cuban Photographer Juan Carlos Alom

Nacidos para ser libres (Born to be free) is a 2012 photo series by Juan Carlos Alom depicting Cubans swimming in the ocean. The water they swim in is a paradise away from the reality of communism; the ocean is where they can be free. This ocean, however, is also the only thing standing between them and their chance at freedom as they sit 90 miles away from the United States. American citizenship by political exile was something that existed with almost no legal obstacle for Cubans before the wet foot, dry foot policy ended in 2017. Continue reading
